Life Without

My pony was inspired by the thing that I do day in and day out "MY JOB". I work in a  prison as a officer. I have been there for 22 years. Inmate life living double celled no bigger then 10x10 with one window. The prison... their cells is their home.My pony represents the life they lead behind the barb wired fences. Shackled to their crimes they have committed against society never allowed to forget.

How I made my pony:

With advise from Maria I was able to complete the pony in about 7 weeks. It took a week just looking at it trying to decide on how to accomplish what I wanted to do. I searched the net on how to achieve the straight lines for the inmate suit. I settled on colored electrical tape. it is less sticky then the black tape. The paint bled little under the tape but was fixable. The chains was easier then I thought to fine. Michel's had all kinds so all I had to decide is what size link would look best. I decided on 2 different sizes with the bigger links going up the side of the pony to give the chain dramatic look. . I searched the internet for a week or more  looking for mini cuffs to use as the shackles for the legs. I bought several small thumb cuffs but every thing was just to big. I search the local stores for small pad locks that idea didn't work either.. I search the net and then eBay looking for small working charm locks. I finally found small silver charm padlocks on eBay from a Korea seller. I had them in my hand in 10 days. The locks gives even a more dramatic look then just plain cuffs.

Now that I had the charms I had to figure out how to attach them to the ponies back. At first I thought I would drill a eye hook into the back of the pony but Maria said that might not be a good idea. I tried itty bitty  nylon dog collar but I didn't like the way it looked. Then I tried black leather like material and added  small buckles (scrap booking) didn't like that either. I again searched the net  and  several pets stores until I found a small leather dog collar. I altered the collar used a chain and lock charm to attach it to the pony and it gave me the appearance I needed to achieve the leather waist belt to attach the chains. I added the key charms just to give it some pizzazz.....

With the chains , suit and, waist belt worked out the face had to be done. Prior to putting the chains on I had to figure out how to make my pony into a twin of one of my appaloosa horses "SPOTTED SEVEN" b/w leopard. How do I get the little black spots like my deceased mare. I decided to try a technique I used in my sons room "paint splatter" but I needed something small enough because you cant get  even spot effect with using a paint brush..... I tried. I found a real small straw sucked up some paint and blew it out on to a napkin. When I got most of the paint out I then blew the paint on to the pony it worked like a charm! I used my fingers to smudge the nose and ears with black and a little bit a pink to give that appy appearance. It actually took more time to figure out how to do it then doing it.

The base was interesting  idea. I wanted a window representing the outside, (freedom)I used would dowels and tried to make them look like bars. I made the bars into a gate with a key lock on the gate (keys on the chain) I used a sponge to achieve the old wall effect. Life WithOut has a nice view of a pasture.

I had allot of fun producing this pony. I had to brain storm on how to do it but once it was figured out it was allot of fun.
